Viewers leave when the spinner appears. We design the delivery pipeline first so video starts quickly and stays smooth on mobile data.
Video Streaming App Development: what the work involves
A video streaming app puts films, shows, courses or live events in front of a paying audience. The business problem is delivery and control: large files must stream smoothly to thousands of phones on uneven networks, and the content must stay behind a subscription or purchase instead of leaking onto the open web.
DevKey builds streaming apps with an HLS pipeline: uploads are transcoded into several quality levels, stored, and delivered through a CDN. The client in Flutter or native Swift and Kotlin plays adaptively, remembers progress and supports downloads. A web admin manages the catalogue, rights windows, subscription plans and curated rows on the home screen.
Core features
Adaptive HLS playback
Multiple quality renditions chosen automatically for the viewer's connection, with fast start, seeking and resume from the last position.
Catalogue and curated rows
Series, seasons, categories and featured rows managed from an admin panel, so merchandising changes need no app update.
Subscriptions and rentals
Monthly plans, single-title purchases and free trials, with entitlement checks on every playback request.
Downloads for offline viewing
Protected downloads with expiry dates and device limits, useful for travel and areas with unreliable connectivity.
Casting and big-screen support
Chromecast and AirPlay casting, with TV apps as a later phase if your audience watches mainly on the living-room screen.
Live streaming option
Scheduled live events with chat and replay, using a managed live pipeline so a spike of viewers does not take the stream down.
What we get right before launch
Transcoding and CDN cost
Every minute of video is processed and delivered many times. We estimate storage and bandwidth for your catalogue size and audience before choosing a hosting approach.
Content protection and piracy
Signed URLs, token expiry and optionally DRM reduce casual piracy. Stricter protection adds cost and device limitations, so we balance it against your content value.
Store billing and regional access
In-app purchases fall under store commission rules, while web payments differ. Geo restrictions and licensing windows need to be enforced consistently on the server.

Common questions, answered
How does video get from upload to a viewer's phone?
Your file is uploaded, transcoded into several qualities, stored and served through a CDN as HLS. The app picks the right quality for the connection, so playback adapts as the network changes.
Can we support live streaming as well?
Yes, through a managed live service that ingests the stream, scales to viewers and records for replay. We usually add live after the on-demand catalogue is stable.
Can we stop people sharing accounts?
We can limit concurrent streams and registered devices, and protect media with signed tokens. Strict enforcement affects user experience, so we agree limits that fit your business model.
What drives the cost of a streaming platform?
Catalogue size, viewer numbers, live support, DRM and the number of platforms such as mobile, web and TV. Delivery costs recur monthly and should be modelled early.

A streaming app is only as good as the first second after a tap. Playback, caching and catalogue rights decide whether anyone stays.
Short Video App Development
A vertical feed lives on one promise: the next clip is already playing before the thumb lifts. We build the capture, upload and preload pipeline around that promise.

Listeners expect playback that keeps going with the screen locked, resumes where they stopped, and never eats their data plan.
