SEO for WebsiteRedesigns
A redesign should improve your site, not erase years of search equity. We bring SEO into the project early so launch day brings no unwelcome surprises.
SEO for Website Redesigns: what the work involves
Redesigns lose traffic for predictable reasons that nobody owned. Designers trim copy to make layouts cleaner. Developers change URLs, rebuild navigation and move content behind scripts. A staging site is left blocked and the block ships to production. Titles and headings are replaced with placeholder text. Because SEO enters the project at the end, if at all, these decisions are baked in before anyone measures their search cost, and the fix after launch is slower and more expensive than avoiding the problem.
We join at the design stage. We inventory current URLs, content, rankings and links to decide what must be preserved, then write SEO requirements for templates: heading structure, metadata fields, canonical logic, structured data, internal links and rendering. During build we review staging, test redirects and compare rendered output against the old site. At launch we run a checklist, verify indexation settings and submit sitemaps. Afterwards we monitor Search Console and logs closely, so any regression is caught within days, not discovered at the next quarterly report.
Core features
Baseline inventory
A record of current URLs, content, rankings, traffic and links, identifying the pages and assets that carry the most value.
Template SEO requirements
A written specification for designers and developers covering headings, metadata, canonicals, schema, internal links and image handling.
Redirect map and testing
A complete old-to-new URL mapping with one-to-one redirects, tested on staging before any change reaches production.
Staging review
Crawls of the pre-launch site to compare structure, content and technical signals with the live version and catch missing elements.
Launch checklist
Verification of robots, noindex tags, sitemaps, analytics and tracking at go-live, including removal of staging blocks.
Post-launch monitoring
Intensive tracking of indexing, errors, crawl behaviour and traffic in the weeks after launch, with fast fixes for regressions.
What we get right before launch
Some fluctuation is normal
Even a well-executed redesign can cause temporary movement while search engines reprocess the site. We prepare stakeholders for this and track recovery, but cannot promise zero change.
Design and SEO sometimes conflict
Minimal pages, image-only text and hidden content may look clean but harm discoverability. We propose alternatives that keep the design intent and keep content accessible.
Launch timing matters
Releasing during a peak sales period raises the stakes of any error. Where possible, we advise scheduling launches when a quick fix and monitoring are feasible.

Common questions, answered
When should SEO join a redesign project?
At the start, before layouts and structure are fixed. Changes at the design stage cost little, while fixing structure or content decisions after launch is slow and can mean a visible traffic dip.
Will a redesign hurt our rankings?
It can if URLs, content or technical settings change carelessly. With planning, redirects and monitoring, the risk drops considerably, but any significant change brings some uncertainty that we cannot eliminate.
Do you work with our existing designers and developers?
Yes. We supply requirements, review staging builds and test the launch, collaborating with your team. If you prefer, we can build in Next.js ourselves, with SEO requirements already part of the code.
What if the redesign has already launched and traffic dropped?
We compare the old and new sites, check redirects, indexation, content differences and rendering, then fix what is wrong. Recovery time depends on the cause, and we cannot promise a return to previous levels.
