Desktop ApplicationDevelopment

Installed software that opens fast, talks to local hardware and keeps working when the network does not.

Desktop Application Development: what the work involves

A web page is not always the right container. Some work needs direct access to printers, barcode scanners, cash drawers, scales or serial devices, needs to stay responsive with thousands of rows, or must keep running in a shop where the internet drops each afternoon. Desktop software answers those needs, and it remains the natural choice for counters, workshops and back offices where staff spend all day in one program.

DevKey builds desktop applications mainly with Electron and TypeScript, sharing code with the web version where a product has one. We store data in a local SQLite database for speed and resilience, then synchronise to a server when connected. Hardware integration, silent printing, auto-update, installer packaging and code signing are treated as part of the deliverable, since a desktop product is only as good as its install and upgrade experience.

What we build

Core features

01

Cross-platform packaging

One codebase builds installers for Windows, macOS and Linux, with the interface adapted to each platform's conventions.

02

Local database

SQLite storage gives instant search and operation without a network, with migrations that upgrade existing data safely on each release.

03

Hardware integration

Receipt and label printers, barcode scanners, cash drawers, weighing scales and card readers connect through drivers or serial interfaces we test on your devices.

04

Background sync

Changes queue locally and upload when the connection returns, with conflict rules agreed in advance and visible sync status for staff.

05

Automatic updates

New versions download quietly and install on restart, with staged rollout and a way to pause if a release misbehaves.

06

Secure local data

Sensitive fields can be encrypted at rest, user sessions are protected and local backups are created on a schedule.

Planned for

What we get right before launch

Updating hundreds of installs

Unlike a website, every machine runs its own copy. We design the update channel, versioned database migrations and backward-compatible sync so old clients do not corrupt new data.

Code signing and security warnings

Unsigned installers trigger operating system warnings that scare staff. We obtain and use a code-signing certificate in the build pipeline, with the cost to you for that certificate stated openly.

Resource use

Electron apps can be heavy on old machines. We profile on your actual hardware, keep memory low and consider a lighter wrapper if the fleet is very old.

Desktop Application Development FAQ

Common questions, answered

Why choose desktop over a web app?

Choose desktop when you need reliable offline operation, direct hardware access or very fast local performance. If staff only need a browser and the connection is stable, a web application is usually cheaper to run.

Can the same system also have a web version?

Yes. We build the interface and business logic so they can be shared, then package them for desktop and serve them online. A common pattern is desktop at the counter and web for owners and remote users.

Which operating systems are supported?

Windows is the most common target in Pakistan, and we also build for macOS and Linux when needed. Very old versions of Windows may limit what we can support, so we check your machines first.

How are updates delivered?

The app checks a release server, downloads the new version in the background and applies it on restart. You can stage rollouts to a few machines first and pause the update if an issue appears.
