E-commerce BackendDevelopment

The catalogue, stock, order and fulfilment engine behind your storefront, built to serve websites, apps and marketplaces from one place.

E-commerce Backend Development: what the work involves

A storefront is the visible tenth of an online business. Behind it sit product data, variants, stock across locations, pricing rules, promotions, orders, payments, shipping and returns. Hosted platforms cover the common cases, but businesses with unusual pricing, several sales channels or tight links to a warehouse system often find themselves fighting plugins. A purpose-built backend gives you control over exactly those parts.

DevKey builds e-commerce backends as clean services with an API-first design. A catalogue module handles products, variants and attributes, an inventory module reserves and releases stock, and an order module tracks state from cart to delivery. Pricing and promotion rules are explicit, shipping and payment providers are pluggable, and any front end, whether Next.js, a mobile app or a marketplace feed, consumes the same documented API.

What we build

Core features

01

Catalogue and variants

Products with options, attributes, media, categories and localised content, managed through an admin and exposed by API.

02

Stock reservation

Stock is held while a customer checks out and released if payment fails, which prevents overselling during busy periods.

03

Pricing and promotion rules

Tiered prices, discounts, coupons, bundles and customer-group pricing are evaluated by a rule engine you can audit.

04

Order lifecycle management

Orders pass through defined states for payment, packing, dispatch, delivery, return and refund, with history at each step.

05

Shipping and courier connectors

Rate calculation, label creation and tracking updates connect to the couriers you use, including cash-on-delivery handling.

06

Channel and marketplace feeds

Sync products, prices and stock to marketplaces and social storefronts, and pull their orders into the same pipeline.

Planned for

What we get right before launch

Overselling under load

Sales campaigns cause bursts of simultaneous checkouts. We use atomic stock operations and queue-backed processing, and load-test the checkout path before a launch.

Cash on delivery reality

COD orders bring returns and unconfirmed deliveries. We model confirmation calls, refusals and courier remittance reconciliation as first-class parts of the order flow.

Build or buy

A custom backend is not always right. If a hosted platform meets your needs, we will say so; custom pays off when your rules or integrations are what make your business different.

E-commerce Backend Development FAQ

Common questions, answered

When does a custom e-commerce backend make sense?

When your pricing, inventory or fulfilment logic does not fit a hosted platform, when you sell across many channels from one stock pool, or when plugins have become slow and risky to maintain.

Can it work with a Next.js or mobile front end?

Yes. The backend exposes REST or GraphQL endpoints for catalogue, cart, checkout and account, so a web storefront, an iOS or Android app and a marketplace feed can all use identical logic.

Does it handle cash on delivery?

Yes. Orders can be flagged COD, confirmed by phone or message, dispatched via your courier and reconciled when the courier remits cash, including refused deliveries and returns that restock items.

Can we migrate from our current store?

Yes. Products, customers and order history can be exported from your current platform and imported with mapping and checks. We plan redirects and a cutover window so search rankings and live orders are not disrupted.
