Expense Tracker AppDevelopment
An expense app that captures a receipt in two taps, sorts spending into categories and gives an accountant something clean to work with.
Expense Tracker App Development: what the work involves
Expense tracking fails at the moment of capture. People mean to log a purchase later and never do, and by month-end the receipts are crumpled in a wallet. Small businesses and field staff have a worse version: claims sent through chat, amounts retyped into spreadsheets and managers approving things they cannot verify.
We build the app so recording a cost takes seconds. A camera scan reads the amount and merchant from a receipt, the user picks a category, and the entry is saved offline and synced later. Budgets warn before a limit is reached. For teams, claims move through submit, approve and reimburse stages with policy checks, and finance exports data to accounting software or a spreadsheet at month-end.
Core features
Receipt scanning
The camera extracts date, total and merchant, with the original image attached as proof of the claim.
Categories and tags
Custom categories, project tags and recurring-expense detection keep records tidy without manual sorting.
Budgets and alerts
Monthly limits per category with warnings as spending approaches them, rather than a surprise at month-end.
Multi-currency handling
Expenses in dollars, dirhams or pounds are stored in original currency with a conversion rate fixed at entry.
Approval workflow for teams
Employees submit claims, managers approve or query them, and finance marks them reimbursed with a payment reference.
Exports for accounting
Monthly CSV or PDF reports grouped by category or project, ready for an accountant or an accounting package.
What we get right before launch
Receipt reading accuracy
Printed receipts in Pakistan vary hugely in format and print quality, so extraction will miss fields. We always show the result for confirmation instead of trusting it silently.
Financial data privacy
Spending patterns are private. Data is encrypted, optional app-lock protects the screen, and we avoid sharing analytics that include amounts with third parties.
Bank and SMS reading limits
Auto-reading bank SMS or statements is tempting, but Google restricts SMS permissions and Apple blocks it. We favour manual capture, statement import and official bank APIs where available.

Common questions, answered
Can the app read bank messages automatically?
Not reliably. Android restricts SMS permissions in published apps and iOS does not allow it, so we use quick manual entry, receipt scans, statement imports and bank APIs if your bank offers them.
Does it work without internet?
Yes. Entries and receipt photos are saved on the device and synced when a connection returns, with conflict handling if the same record was edited on another phone.
Can a company use it for staff claims?
Yes. Companies get a team mode with expense policies, approval chains and reimbursement tracking, and a finance dashboard for reviewing and exporting claims.
Can it sync with accounting software?
Through exports as standard, and direct integration with packages that provide an API. We check which software your accountant uses first so the categories and fields line up.
