Crawl BudgetOptimization

Crawl budget matters only on large sites, and there it matters a lot. We use server data to see where crawlers spend their visits and stop the waste.

Crawl Budget Optimization: what the work involves

Most websites never need to think about crawl budget; Google will find everything on a few thousand pages without help. The picture changes for sites with hundreds of thousands of URLs, rapidly changing inventory or auto-generated parameters. There, crawlers can spend huge numbers of requests on filter combinations, session identifiers, calendar pages and redirect chains while new or updated pages that matter wait days to be revisited. Symptoms include slow indexing of fresh content and Search Console reporting many URLs as discovered but not yet crawled.

We start by verifying that you really have a crawl problem, rather than a content or quality problem that looks similar. Server logs show what Googlebot actually requests, how often and with what response codes. We classify those requests by URL type, quantify what portion goes to low-value patterns, and rank the causes. Fixes may include parameter handling, robots rules, internal link clean-up, faster server responses, removal of redirect chains and accurate sitemaps. We then re-check logs to confirm that crawling shifted toward priority pages.

What we build

Core features

01

Log-based crawl profile

Googlebot requests grouped by section, template, status code and frequency, showing precisely where attention is going.

02

Waste pattern identification

Detection of crawl traps such as endless filter combinations, infinite calendars, session parameters and duplicate paths.

03

Server response review

Analysis of response times and error rates, since a slow or unstable server limits how much crawlers will fetch.

04

Redirect and status clean-up

Collapse of redirect chains, removal of internal links to redirecting or erroring URLs and correction of soft errors.

05

Sitemap and priority signalling

Accurate sitemaps limited to canonical, indexable URLs with trustworthy modification dates, so freshness hints are believable.

06

Before and after verification

Repeat log analysis after changes to confirm that crawl allocation moved, rather than assuming it did.

Planned for

What we get right before launch

Often a non-issue for small sites

If your site has a modest number of pages and indexes promptly, crawl budget work is a distraction. We will tell you so instead of selling a service you do not need.

Blocking is not de-indexing

A robots.txt disallow stops crawling but can leave URLs indexed without content, and blocked pages cannot pass directives like noindex. The right tool depends on the goal.

Needs server log access

Search Console crawl stats are useful but sampled. Meaningful diagnosis needs raw logs, which may involve your hosting provider or a CDN configuration.

Crawl Budget Optimization FAQ

Common questions, answered

Does my site have a crawl budget problem?

Probably not unless it is large or generates many URLs automatically. Slow indexing of new pages, heavy crawling of parameter URLs in logs and many discovered-not-crawled URLs are the signs we check for.

Will robots.txt fix crawl waste?

It can prevent crawling of junk patterns, but it is a blunt instrument with side effects. We often prefer fixing the source of URL generation, and use robots rules only where they suit the case.

Why do you need our server logs?

Logs record every request crawlers make, so they show real behaviour instead of estimates. Without them we can only guess where waste occurs. We handle the data securely and only analyse bot traffic.

How soon will Google crawl differently?

Changes in crawl patterns typically appear over weeks as systems adapt. We re-check logs afterwards and report what moved, without promising specific crawl rates or indexing speed.
