Faceted NavigationSEO

Filters help shoppers and flood crawlers. We decide which facet combinations deserve to be found and shut the door on the rest.

Faceted Navigation SEO: what the work involves

Faceted navigation lets visitors narrow a catalogue by colour, size, brand, price and more. Each combination generates a URL, and the number of combinations grows explosively: a modest category with a handful of filters can produce millions of addressable pages, most of them near-duplicates or empty result sets. Crawlers follow the links dutifully, spending their attention on junk while fresh products wait, and indexed filter pages compete with the categories they came from.

We catalogue your facets and measure which have real search demand, such as a brand within a category, versus pure shopping utility, such as sorting or price sliders. Valuable combinations become deliberate landing pages with clean URLs, unique titles and copy. The rest are managed with a combination of approaches chosen to fit the platform: fewer crawlable links, canonicals, noindex where appropriate, JavaScript-driven state that does not create anchors and, as a last resort, robots rules. We then check logs and Search Console to confirm the explosion has stopped.

What we build

Core features

01

Facet inventory and demand check

Listing every filter and combination, then testing which have genuine search interest worth building a landing page for.

02

Indexable facet landing pages

Selected combinations turned into stable, well-titled pages with distinct copy, included in sitemaps and linked internally.

03

Crawl control mechanisms

Choice of nofollow links, canonicals, noindex tags, scripted interactions or robots rules for the remaining combinations, based on the platform.

04

URL parameter design

Consistent parameter ordering and naming, so the same selection never produces different URLs through different click paths.

05

Empty result handling

Rules so zero-result combinations return a proper status instead of indexable thin pages or soft errors.

06

Verification through logs

Crawl logs and index coverage compared before and after, confirming that bots now spend their time on pages that matter.

Planned for

What we get right before launch

No single tag solves it

Canonicals are hints, noindex still requires crawling and robots blocks hide signals. Combining methods in the right order matters, and the wrong mix can make matters worse.

Blocking valuable combinations

Brand plus category pages often capture strong demand. Blanket rules that remove all facets can destroy those, so selection must be based on data.

Platform constraints

Shopify, Magento and custom builds offer different controls over facet URLs. Recommendations must fit what the platform allows or be accompanied by development work.

Faceted Navigation SEO FAQ

Common questions, answered

Should filter pages be indexed?

Only those with real search demand and distinct content, such as a brand within a category. Most combinations, especially sorting and price filters, should stay out of the index to avoid duplicates and wasted crawling.

Is robots.txt the best way to block facets?

Rarely the only way. It stops crawling but not indexing of linked URLs and prevents canonicals being read. We prefer to limit link generation and use directives, with robots rules as a supporting measure.

How do I know if facets are hurting my site?

Signs include far more indexed or crawled URLs than products, parameter URLs dominating server logs, and category pages being outranked by their own filtered versions. A crawl and logs confirm it.

Will fixing facets raise rankings?

It can help by concentrating crawling and signals on important pages, but we cannot promise ranking changes. The clearest early effect is cleaner crawl patterns and faster discovery of new products.
