SEO CompetitorAnalysis

Your search competitors are not always the businesses you compete with in real life. We find who Google actually compares you with and where they are beatable.

SEO Competitor Analysis: what the work involves

Owners tend to benchmark against the company down the road, but search results are crowded with publishers, marketplaces, directories and comparison sites that take clicks from everyone. Without knowing who truly occupies the results you want, it is easy to copy a rival's tactics that only work because of their brand strength, or to ignore a smaller site that is quietly collecting the queries you care about.

We define your competitive set from the search results for your priority topics, then compare each competitor on topic coverage, page types, internal structure, backlink sources, technical quality and the search features they win. The output is a gap list: topics they cover that you lack, links they have earned that you could reasonably approach, and weaknesses in their pages that a better answer could exploit.

What we build

Core features

01

Search-based competitor set

Competitors are identified from actual results for your target queries, including non-obvious publishers and marketplaces.

02

Content gap analysis

Topics and questions that rivals rank for and you do not, sorted by relevance and the effort required to cover them.

03

Backlink comparison

Where competitors earn mentions, which asset types attracted them and which sources are realistic for you to approach.

04

Site structure review

How rivals organise categories, location pages and internal links, and what that suggests about their priorities.

05

SERP feature mapping

Snippets, local packs, video and shopping results that appear for your queries, and who currently holds them.

06

Opportunity shortlist

A ranked list of gaps with suggested actions and an honest assessment of how difficult each will be.

Planned for

What we get right before launch

Copying is a weak strategy

Matching a competitor page for page rarely overtakes them. We look for angles they miss, such as local detail, clearer answers or firsthand experience.

Third-party data is modelled

Traffic and keyword estimates for other sites come from sampled data and can be off by a wide margin. We use them for direction, not accuracy.

Some gaps are not worth closing

A rival may rank for terms that never convert. We filter the list by business value so effort follows relevance.

SEO Competitor Analysis FAQ

Common questions, answered

How do you choose which competitors to analyse?

We look at who appears for your most valuable queries, not who you consider a rival offline. That often adds directories, publishers and marketplaces, and we separate direct business competitors from search competitors.

Can I see exactly what my competitors are doing?

Much of their public activity is observable: pages, structure, links and visible changes. Their private strategy, budgets and results are not, and tools only estimate traffic. We are clear about the limits of the data.

How often should competitor analysis be refreshed?

A thorough review once or twice a year suits most businesses, with lighter monitoring between. Competitive sets can shift quickly after algorithm updates, launches or a competitor relaunching their site.

Will this help me outrank a bigger brand?

It can show where a smaller site has a realistic chance, such as specific topics, local queries or better-quality answers. It cannot guarantee you will overtake a stronger brand, and we say so plainly.
