Magazine WebsiteDevelopment

A magazine is curated reading. Give long-form stories room to breathe, organise them by issue and theme, and turn loyal readers into subscribers.

Magazine Website Development: what the work involves

Where a news site publishes constantly, a magazine publishes with intent: features, essays, interviews and photo stories assembled into issues or editorial themes. Readers come for depth and design, and they stay for the voice of the publication. The website must preserve that. Cramped templates, narrow columns and jarring ads can ruin a carefully edited piece. At the same time, the business side still needs revenue, whether from subscriptions, sponsors or events.

We design long-form article templates with generous typography, pull quotes, embedded galleries and optional full-bleed imagery, and wrap them in an issue structure with covers, contents pages and archives. Subscriber access can be metered or fully gated, with plans and payments handled through the site. Newsletter sign-up is placed where readers finish a piece. Sponsor features are labelled clearly and kept separate from editorial. Editors work in a CMS that supports drafts, contributor accounts and scheduled releases of each issue.

What we build

Core features

01

Long-form article templates

Readable typography, pull quotes, image essays and embedded media designed for sustained reading on both phones and desktops.

02

Issues, covers and archives

Each issue has a cover, contents and a permanent page, and back issues are browsable by date, theme or contributor.

03

Subscriptions and paywall

Free, metered and members-only content with recurring plans, trial periods and subscriber account management.

04

Contributor accounts

Writers submit drafts, editors comment and approve, and contributor profiles collect each person's published pieces.

05

Newsletter and audience building

Sign-up modules and issue-launch emails bring readers back and give the publication a list independent of social platforms.

06

Labelled sponsor content

Sponsored features and display placements are distinguished from editorial copy, protecting reader trust while earning revenue.

Planned for

What we get right before launch

Copyright and contributor rights

Writers and photographers retain rights unless assigned. Contributor terms and image credits should be recorded in the CMS so republishing does not cause disputes.

Balancing paywall and reach

Too strict a paywall limits discovery, too loose a one earns nothing. We build flexible rules so you can test limits with real reader behaviour.

Migrating from print and PDF archives

Old issues in PDF are poor for search and mobile. Converting selected archives to structured articles takes editorial effort that should be budgeted early.

Magazine Website Development FAQ

Common questions, answered

Can we publish issues on a schedule?

Yes. Articles are prepared in advance and an issue goes live at a set time, with its contents page, cover and newsletter announcement released together.

How do subscriptions work?

Readers choose a plan, pay by card or supported local method and unlock members-only content immediately. Renewals, cancellations and failed payments are handled automatically.

Can we keep our print PDFs available?

Yes. Back issues can be offered as downloadable PDFs to subscribers, though converting key stories into web articles will help search visibility and mobile reading.

Can we sell advertising on the site?

Yes. Fixed sponsor slots, newsletter placements and branded features can be managed directly, or you can use an ad network, with limits on scripts to protect page speed.
