Bike Sharing AppDevelopment
A shared bike has to unlock in seconds, be found on a map and be returned properly. The app is the key, the meter and the rulebook.
Bike Sharing App Development: what the work involves
A bike sharing app lets people unlock a bicycle or e-scooter, ride it across a campus or city and leave it at a station or in a permitted zone. The business problem is fleet operations: bikes go missing, batteries die, vehicles are parked badly and rebalancing between busy and empty areas eats margin.
DevKey builds the rider app, the connection to smart locks over Bluetooth or a cellular IoT module, and an operator console. Riders find nearby bikes on a map, scan the QR code to unlock, ride with a live timer and end the trip inside an allowed zone. Operators track each vehicle, see battery levels and fault reports, assign field staff to rebalance and charge, and review revenue per bike.
Core features
Live map of available vehicles
Nearby bikes and stations with battery or range, distance, and a reserve option that holds a bike for a short time.
QR or Bluetooth unlock
Scan to start, with the unlock command sent through Bluetooth or the cloud to the lock, and clear feedback if it fails.
Ride timing and fare calculation
Pay per minute, per ride or through passes, with the current fare visible during the trip and a summary at the end.
Zones and end-of-ride checks
Geofenced parking areas, no-ride zones and a photo of the parked bike so improper parking is visible and chargeable.
Wallet, passes and deposits
Prepaid balance, daily or monthly passes and an optional refundable deposit, using local wallets or cards.
Fleet operations console
Vehicle status, battery and fault alerts, task lists for rebalancing and charging, and revenue and utilisation reports.
What we get right before launch
Lock hardware and connectivity
Locks vary by manufacturer and use Bluetooth, GPS and cellular modules differently. We confirm the hardware protocol first and test unlock reliability in real street conditions.
Background location and battery
Tracking a ride needs location while the screen is off. We use compliant foreground services and on-lock GPS where possible so the rider's phone battery is not drained.
Theft, vandalism and safety
Vehicles are left outdoors. GPS alerts, tamper detection, helmet guidance, incident reporting and clear liability terms are part of operating a fleet responsibly.

Common questions, answered
Which smart locks can you integrate with?
Locks from vendors that provide an SDK or documented Bluetooth or cloud protocol. We review the exact model early, because the unlock sequence and update behaviour differ between manufacturers.
Can the app work for a small campus fleet?
Yes. A campus version can use docking stations or simple QR codes and a small operator console. It is a sensible pilot before expanding to open-street or citywide operation.
How do you handle bikes parked in the wrong place?
Geofencing blocks ride endings outside allowed zones, a parking photo documents the result, and operators can apply a fee or send staff to relocate the vehicle.
Can we offer e-scooters as well as bicycles?
Yes, with additional battery and speed-zone controls. Regulations on e-scooters vary, so we confirm local rules before building speed-limiting and helmet reminders.
