Chat AppDevelopment

Messaging looks simple until a message arrives twice, never arrives, or arrives after the phone was asleep for an hour. We engineer for those cases.

Chat App Development: what the work involves

A chat app is either the product itself or the layer that makes another product usable: buyers talking to sellers, patients to clinics, teams to field staff. The business problem is trust in delivery. People forgive a plain interface, but not a message that silently vanished or a notification that never rang.

DevKey builds chat on WebSockets or Firebase and Supabase realtime, backed by a message store that assigns ordering and delivery state on the server. The client keeps a local database so conversations open instantly offline, queues unsent messages, and reconciles when the connection returns. Push through FCM and APNs wakes the app when it is closed.

What we build

Core features

01

Direct and group conversations

One-to-one threads and groups with admins, member roles, invite links and per-conversation mute controls.

02

Delivery and read states

Sending, sent, delivered and read indicators driven by server acknowledgements, so the tick marks reflect reality rather than optimistic guesses.

03

Rich media and voice notes

Images, documents and recorded voice notes with upload progress, retry on failure and playback that survives screen changes.

04

Offline message queue

Messages typed without signal are stored locally and sent in order once the network returns, with clear failed-state controls.

05

Typing, presence and last seen

Lightweight presence signals that respect privacy settings, throttled so they do not drain battery or flood the server.

06

Search and message history

Local full-text search across conversations plus server-side history sync when a user signs in on a new phone.

Planned for

What we get right before launch

Background delivery and battery

Android manufacturers aggressively kill background apps, and iOS limits wake-ups. We rely on high-priority push and test on Xiaomi, Oppo and Samsung firmware where delivery commonly breaks.

Encryption and data handling

Transport encryption is standard, but end-to-end encryption changes search, backup and moderation. We help you decide what your users and regulators actually need before building it.

Message ordering and duplicates

Retries create duplicates and clocks drift. We use client-generated IDs and server timestamps so conversations stay consistent across devices.

Chat App Development FAQ

Common questions, answered

Do you build end-to-end encrypted chat?

We can, using established protocols rather than inventing our own. It adds complexity to search, multi-device sync and backups, so we first confirm whether transport encryption with strict access control meets your actual requirements.

Can chat be added inside an existing app?

Yes. We often add messaging to marketplace, booking or healthcare apps as a module, connecting it to your existing user accounts and order or appointment records so conversations stay in context.

How do notifications work when the app is closed?

We use FCM for Android and APNs for iOS with data payloads that update the local database. We also test against vendor battery restrictions, since that is where most missed-message complaints originate.

What affects the development cost of a chat app?

Group features, media types, voice or video calls, encryption and moderation tools all add scope. Expected concurrent users shape the backend design more than the interface does.
