Social Media AppDevelopment

Social apps live or die on how fast the feed loads and how safe the community feels. We build both into the foundation, not as an afterthought.

Social Media App Development: what the work involves

A social media app is a bet that a specific group of people wants a shared space of their own: a niche hobby, a city, a profession, a campus. The business problem is rarely building yet another general network. It is giving that group a feed, a identity and a reason to return daily, while keeping spam, abuse and bad actors from emptying the room.

DevKey builds social apps with a Flutter or React Native client and a Node.js and PostgreSQL backend, using Firebase or Supabase where realtime fits. We design the feed ranking, follow graph, media upload pipeline and report-and-review tooling together, so the first release already behaves like a product people can trust with their photos and names.

What we build

Core features

01

Ranked and chronological feeds

Cursor-paginated feeds with a simple ranking signal, pull-to-refresh and skeleton loaders, so scrolling stays smooth even on mid-range Android phones.

02

Profiles and follow graph

Public and private accounts, follow requests, blocking, muting and privacy toggles stored as first-class data rather than bolted-on flags.

03

Media upload pipeline

Photos and short clips are compressed on-device, uploaded in resumable chunks and resized server-side into thumbnails so weak connections do not lose a post.

04

Reactions, comments and sharing

Threaded comments, emoji reactions, mentions and deep-linked shares that open the exact post inside the app instead of a generic landing page.

05

Reporting and moderation queue

In-app report flows feed an admin dashboard with review states, keyword filters and account suspension, which both store reviewers and your community expect to see.

06

Notification preferences

Push notifications grouped by type, with per-category switches and quiet hours, so activity alerts bring people back without becoming the reason they mute the app.

Planned for

What we get right before launch

User-generated content rules

Apple and Google both require visible reporting, blocking and a way to remove abusive content before approval. We build these first and document your moderation process for review notes.

The cold-start problem

An empty feed kills retention. We plan seeded content, invite flows and interest onboarding so a new user sees something relevant within the first session.

Media cost and storage growth

Photos and video are the main running cost. Compression, CDN caching and retention policies are designed upfront so storage does not quietly outgrow your budget.

Social Media App Development FAQ

Common questions, answered

Can you build a social app that competes with big platforms?

We would not suggest competing head-on. The realistic route is a focused community with a clear reason to exist. We help you scope a first release around that audience, then add features as real usage shows what members want.

How do you handle content moderation?

We ship reporting, blocking and an admin review queue in the first version, plus automated keyword and image checks where needed. Store policies demand this for user-generated content, and it protects your community from day one.

What drives the cost of a social media app?

Scope drives it: feed complexity, media and video support, chat, live features and moderation tooling. Backend infrastructure grows with user count. We usually recommend a lean first release and phase the rest after launch.

Will it work on low-end Android phones in Pakistan?

Yes. We test on budget devices, compress images before upload, cache aggressively and keep list rendering light, because many of your users will not be on flagship hardware or fast networks.
