QR Menu Ordering AppDevelopment

Diners at the table want to order without waiting for a waiter, and kitchens want orders that are complete and legible. A scan connects both.

QR Menu Ordering App Development: what the work involves

A QR menu ordering app lets guests scan a code on the table, see the live menu with photos, place an order and pay, without downloading anything heavy. The business problem is table turnover and staffing: waiters are stretched during rushes, orders get mis-heard, and printed menus are out of date the moment a price or an item changes.

DevKey builds this as a lightweight app or installable web app backed by a Node.js and PostgreSQL service. Each table has a unique code, orders go to a kitchen display or printer in real time, and staff mark items as ready. Owners edit menus, sold-out items and prices from a panel, and the same system can take takeaway and delivery orders through one catalogue.

What we build

Core features

01

Table-specific QR codes

Each table or seat carries its own code, so an order lands with the correct location and staff know exactly where to bring it.

02

Live digital menu

Photos, descriptions, modifiers and allergen notes, with sold-out toggles that apply instantly without reprinting anything.

03

Order, add-on and call-waiter

Guests place a first order, add items later, request the bill or call a waiter, keeping service flowing through the whole meal.

04

Kitchen display and tickets

Orders appear on a kitchen screen or thermal printer, split by station, with status updates that notify the table when food is ready.

05

Pay at the table

Split bills, tips and payment through cards or wallets, with pay-at-counter and cash as fallback for guests who prefer them.

06

Menu management and reports

Edit items, prices and timings across branches, and review best sellers, peak hours and average order value.

Planned for

What we get right before launch

Guests without smartphones or patience

Older diners may not want to scan anything. We keep waiters able to place orders on the same system, so the digital and traditional flows share one kitchen queue.

Fake or abusive orders

Anyone who photographs a code could order from home. Short-lived session tokens, table confirmation by staff and optional location checks stop pranks and wasted food.

Weak restaurant wifi

Guests usually use mobile data but kitchens rely on venue wifi. We add retry logic, printer fallback and an offline-tolerant kitchen screen so a dropped router does not stop service.

QR Menu Ordering App Development FAQ

Common questions, answered

Do guests have to install an app?

Not necessarily. A QR code can open a fast web experience, and an app can be offered for repeat guests who want history and loyalty. Many venues start with the lighter option and add the app later.

Can it print to our kitchen printers?

Usually yes. We support common thermal printers over the network, and kitchen display screens as an alternative, routing items to the correct station such as grill, bar or dessert.

Can we update prices and mark items sold out ourselves?

Yes. A simple panel lets managers change items, prices and availability, and the guest menu updates immediately, so staff no longer apologise for dishes that have run out.

How is this different from a full restaurant app?

A QR ordering system is focused on in-venue service with no sign-up. A full restaurant app adds accounts, delivery, loyalty and reservations for customers who order from home.
