Wearable Companion AppDevelopment

A watch or band is only as useful as the phone app behind it. We build the sync, the dashboards and the tiny glanceable screens.

Wearable Companion App Development: what the work involves

A wearable companion app pairs with a smartwatch, fitness band, ring or medical sensor, and turns raw readings into something a person can understand. The business problem is connection quality and battery. If sync fails or the watch dies by lunchtime, users blame the app first, and the device ends up in a drawer.

DevKey builds companion apps with Bluetooth Low Energy for device communication, health data integration through HealthKit and Health Connect, and native watch apps in SwiftUI for Apple Watch and Compose for Wear OS. We handle background sync, firmware update transfer, and a phone dashboard with trends, goals and alerts. A cloud service stores history so data survives a phone change.

What we build

Core features

01

Bluetooth Low Energy pairing and sync

Reliable discovery, bonding and data transfer, with automatic reconnection after the device or phone moves out of range and back.

02

Native watch screens

Glanceable Apple Watch and Wear OS views, complications and quick actions, built for tiny screens and short interactions.

03

Health data integration

Reading and writing steps, heart rate and sleep through HealthKit and Health Connect, with explicit user consent for each data type.

04

Dashboards and trends

Daily, weekly and monthly charts, goals and streaks that turn sensor readings into progress a person actually cares about.

05

Firmware updates over the air

Download, verify and transfer firmware to the device with progress, resume and rollback handling, so a failed update does not brick it.

06

Alerts and notification mirroring

Phone notifications, reminders and threshold alerts such as high heart rate, delivered to the wrist and to a nominated contact.

Planned for

What we get right before launch

Background execution limits

iOS and Android restrict background Bluetooth and sync. We use platform-approved modes and test long-running sessions so data is not silently lost when the app is closed.

Health data sensitivity

Heart rate and sleep are personal. Granular consent, encryption, clear policies and the right to delete are essential, and medical claims bring regulatory scrutiny.

Device fragmentation

Android phones implement Bluetooth differently across brands. We test pairing and sync on a spread of handsets, because the most common support issues arise there.

Wearable Companion App Development FAQ

Common questions, answered

Can one codebase cover phone and watch?

The phone app can be Flutter or React Native, but watch apps are normally native, in SwiftUI for Apple Watch and Compose for Wear OS. A shared backend and data model keep them consistent.

How do you handle data from our own band?

We implement your device's Bluetooth protocol or SDK, parse the readings, store them locally and sync to a cloud account. You supply the protocol documentation or we work from the manufacturer's SDK.

Is the data safe and private?

We request permissions per data type, encrypt in transit and at rest, and let users export or delete their history. If the data is used for medical decisions, additional compliance steps apply.

Will the app drain the phone battery?

Well-designed Bluetooth Low Energy sync uses very little power. We batch transfers, avoid constant scanning and test over full days to keep the impact small.
