Smart Home AppDevelopment

A smart plug that takes six taps to pair gets returned. We build the setup, control and automation experience that makes connected hardware feel simple.

Smart Home App Development: what the work involves

A smart home app is the face of a physical product: switches, lights, cameras, meters, fans, locks or sensors. The business problem is that the hardware may be excellent, but a clumsy pairing flow or a laggy control screen is what customers review. In Pakistan, load shedding and unstable Wi-Fi make dependable behaviour even harder to deliver.

DevKey builds the app alongside your firmware team, handling device onboarding over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi provisioning, then control through MQTT or a cloud service with local-network shortcuts when the internet is down. The app stores schedules, scenes and shared access for family members, and receives alerts when a device goes offline, a sensor trips or energy use is unusual.

What we build

Core features

01

Guided device pairing

Bluetooth discovery and Wi-Fi provisioning in a few clear steps, with plain-language troubleshooting when a router or password gets in the way.

02

Real-time control

Toggles, dimmers and status that reflect the device's true state through MQTT, rather than guessing from the last command sent.

03

Schedules, scenes and automation

Timers, sunrise rules, one-tap scenes and simple if-this-then-that conditions that keep running on the device even when the phone is off.

04

Local fallback control

When the internet is down, the app talks to devices on the same Wi-Fi network directly, so lights and fans still respond.

05

Family sharing and access levels

Invite household members with limited permissions, including guest access that expires, and a history of who changed what.

06

Alerts and energy insights

Notifications for offline devices, motion or door events, and usage charts that help owners see where electricity is going.

Planned for

What we get right before launch

Unreliable connectivity and power

Devices drop off Wi-Fi and reboot after outages. We design state recovery, reconnection and offline-capable schedules so the home settles back to a known state.

Device and account security

Connected locks and cameras are targets. We use device certificates, encrypted channels and strict access control, and plan firmware update flows from the start.

Platform permissions

Bluetooth, local network and notification permissions differ between iOS and Android versions. We handle each prompt gracefully since a denied permission otherwise looks like a broken device.

Smart Home App Development FAQ

Common questions, answered

Do you also write the device firmware?

Our focus is the app and cloud. We work with your firmware engineers or manufacturer, agreeing a clear protocol for pairing and messages. If you need firmware help, we can discuss it separately.

Should we use Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or both?

Often both: Bluetooth for easy first-time setup and nearby control, Wi-Fi with a cloud link for remote access. The right mix depends on device power, cost and how far owners will be from them.

Can the app integrate with Alexa or Google Home?

Yes, through their official smart home integrations once your cloud service exposes the devices. This is usually a second phase after the core app and device protocol are stable.

What if the internet goes down at home?

We add local-network control and keep schedules stored on the device, so basic features keep working during an outage and sync back up when the connection returns.
