Online Examination Software Development: what the work involves

Paper exams cost an institution days of printing, invigilation, marking and result compilation, and a single leaked paper can void the whole sitting. Online examination software moves the question bank, the paper assembly and the marking into one controlled system, so an exam can be set on Monday, taken on Wednesday and graded the moment candidates submit.

We build examination platforms around your assessment style. Question banks are tagged by subject, topic and difficulty, papers are assembled by rule so every candidate receives a different mix, and the timer runs on the server so a candidate cannot extend it by refreshing the page. Subjective answers go to a marker queue with a rubric, while objective ones are scored instantly.

What we build

Core features

01

Tagged question bank

Multiple choice, true-false, numeric and long-answer questions are stored with subject, topic, marks and difficulty, ready for rule-based paper assembly.

02

Randomised paper sets

Each candidate receives questions and option order drawn from the bank by your blueprint, which makes copying from a neighbour's screen pointless.

03

Server-side timer and autosave

Answers are saved as the candidate works, and the countdown is held on the server, so a dropped connection resumes where the candidate left off within the allowed time.

04

Marker workspace

Long answers are distributed to markers with a rubric and moderation step, and the final mark combines automatic and manual scores.

05

Result analysis

Per-question difficulty, topic weakness, rank lists and candidate scorecards are generated once marking closes, exportable for the registrar.

06

Candidate scheduling and access

Candidates are enrolled into sessions with a start window, and each receives a unique link or credential that is valid only for that sitting.

Planned for

What we get right before launch

Integrity without overreach

Tab-switch logging, one-attempt locks and question shuffling deter cheating, but camera proctoring raises privacy and bandwidth issues. We agree the level of monitoring with you and state it plainly to candidates.

Load at the start bell

Hundreds of candidates starting at one minute create a spike. We queue starts, cache paper content and load-test against the real candidate count before exam day.

Disputed results

Candidates will challenge marks. Every response, timestamp and marker edit is kept in an audit trail so a recheck can show exactly what happened.

Online Examination Software Development FAQ

Common questions, answered

Can candidates sit the exam on low-end phones?

The candidate view is a light responsive page that works on modest phones and shared lab computers. We test on the devices your candidates really use and keep images compressed to suit weaker connections.

How are long answers and diagrams handled?

Typed long answers go to a marker queue with your rubric. For diagrams or handwritten work, candidates can upload a photo, and markers view it beside the model answer when awarding marks.

Can we reuse the question bank across exams?

Yes. Questions are stored once and pulled into any paper by your blueprint. You can retire weak questions after reading the difficulty analysis, and import existing banks from spreadsheet files.

What affects the project cost?

Expected concurrent candidates, question types, marking workflow, proctoring level and integration with your admissions or student system are the main drivers. We scope these before giving a fixed quote.
