Kiosk AppDevelopment

A kiosk is used by strangers, standing up, in a hurry, and nobody is there to fix it. The app must be obvious, locked down and quietly self-healing.

Kiosk App Development: what the work involves

A kiosk app turns a tablet or touchscreen into a self-service point: ordering at a fast-food counter, checking in at a clinic, issuing a queue number, registering visitors or browsing a product catalogue. The business problem is throughput and labour. Queues grow at peak hours, and every minute a staff member spends on routine entry is a minute not spent on service.

DevKey builds kiosk apps in Flutter or native Android with a locked-down shell: the device boots straight into the app, system navigation is blocked, and a hidden admin gesture opens settings. Large touch targets, short flows and timeout resets keep every session clean. Remote management lets you update content, check device health and see transactions from a central console.

What we build

Core features

01

Locked-down kiosk mode

The device launches only your app, blocks the home and back buttons and restarts automatically after crashes or power loss.

02

Touch-first, short flows

Big buttons, minimal typing and a clear progress path, with automatic reset after inactivity so the next person never sees the last session.

03

Payments and receipt printing

Card terminals, QR wallets and cash-at-counter hand-off, plus thermal receipt and token printing through connected hardware.

04

Multi-language interface

Urdu, English and other languages selectable on the first screen, with proper right-to-left layout and readable fonts at a distance.

05

Remote content and configuration

Update menus, prices, promotions and screen layouts from the cloud, for one kiosk or the whole fleet, without visiting the site.

06

Health monitoring and logs

A dashboard showing which kiosks are online, printer status and errors, so staff learn of a problem before a customer does.

Planned for

What we get right before launch

Hardware and peripherals

Printers, scanners and card readers have vendor SDKs and quirks. We confirm models early and test the full chain on the real kiosk before building screens around it.

Unattended reliability

Nobody restarts a kiosk at midnight. Watchdog restarts, offline order queues and automatic app updates keep machines running without a technician.

Accessibility and public use

Kiosks serve everyone, including wheelchair users and people with low vision. Screen height, contrast, text size and audio prompts need deliberate design.

Kiosk App Development FAQ

Common questions, answered

What hardware do kiosks run on?

Most commonly Android tablets or all-in-one touchscreens, because they are affordable and manageable. We can also support Windows-based kiosks if you need specific peripherals that only run there.

How do you stop customers leaving the app?

By running the device in dedicated kiosk mode, which blocks navigation and system gestures and returns to the app after any restart. A protected admin gesture lets staff access settings.

Can kiosks keep working if the internet drops?

For many flows, yes. Menus are cached and orders are queued locally, then synced on reconnection. Online-only steps such as card authorisation are handled with clear messages and fallbacks.

Can we manage many kiosks from one place?

Yes. A central console pushes content and app updates, shows device health and collects transaction data across all locations, which matters once you have more than a few machines.
